Q&A
Describe some of the key returners this season.
Male Returners: Garret Neal, Alex Dawn, Ryan Mcilvaine, Nathan DeMars, Ben Chitwood.
Female Returners: Mackenzie Saulnier, Maddison Tunnel, Alison Chitwood.
What are your goals for this season?
“Want to get to postseason, our teams the last few years have had individuals be state qualifiers. Our main goal is to get our teams as a whole to state like we did a few years back.”
How do you improve from last years season?
“We’ve got a whole bunch of new bowlers this year so we need to bring them on and introduce them to the culture, how it works on our team and how Northwest goes about bowling. Getting them experience for when they are older and starters on the team.” For many it will be an improving season and getting introduced into the sport more than before.
Describe what the team will be like for the newcomers?
“A lot of kids come into the sport with no background and as much knowledge of the sport as much as some others, do we have to get them up to speed. A lot of individual training sessions and outside practice. Half of the team will be new bowlers this year.
Describe the game plan for this year.
“Well start of simple and get some of the fundamentals down, then build toward what the roster is going to look like when we get to the postseason, we will do a lot of flip-flopping of the players to get them the experience they will need.” The teams will consist of a six man squad for girls and boys varsity teams, along with a six man squad for both girls and boys JV teams.
Who are your notable departures?
Our most notable departures were Adam Wood, Kay Barker, Jordan Jewett, along with most of the varsity girls team one.
What are your chances for going to state this year?
“We have to have a lot of girls and boys step up, the boys team has been a middle of the pack team and the girls, with the loss of many varsity bowlers really have to step up.” We have a good as of a chance of any team as long as some step up as leaders and help improve the newer bowlers.
What will be the key for a successful season?
“Buy-in with all of the new people, to show them that bowling isn’t just an enjoyable sport but that people have to work to win. We are a competitive team and that we want to win.”

Ravens Bowling Recap

The Ravens competed in a great tournament at Park Lanes bowling alley in Shawnee Kansas last Wednesday.
IMG_0070Over a stretch of 10 games both boys and the girls shot 100 pins less than the second place team and 200 pins less than the first place team.
Both the boys and girls had great games against a variety of teams.
The best game for the boys was against Leavenworth with a score of 480. The best game for the girls was against Gardner Edgerton with a score of 392.
“We succeeded by being tough when we got down in the middle of the games,” Coach Hulsen said.
Both teams had tough, well-fought games. The teams played very well during the tournament and both teams had a final overall of 3rd place.

Saulnier looks to return to state

In her sophomore year, Mackenzie Saulnier won state at bowling.
As a senior she hopes to go back and win state again.
“As a kid I would go to my parents bowling meets and sleep under the table while they bowled, so bowling has been there all my life,” Saulnier said.
Going into her senior year, Saulnier hopes to bowl very well this season.
“I would really like to win state again and I would also like to have the highest female average in Kansas for the third year in a row,” Saulnier said.
So far this year, the bowling team is off to a great start and have come together as a whole.
“The team is pretty outgoing, and we build each other up to keep going and have a good game,”  Saulnier said.
With the team playing well the Ravens hope to go on a run for state champions.

Bowling away the competition

Continuing with a tradition of great bowling, the Olathe Northwest bowling team dominated the lanes beating out the two other teams by over a thousand points.
On WednesdayScreen Shot 2015-01-15 at 2.47.11 PM, the Raven bowling teams competed in their second meet of the season, bowling against Washington and Atchison High Schools.
The Ravens blew away their competition, winning in every category.
“Overall we were very satisfied with the boys and girls teams,” Coach Potter said.
The boy’s varsity team won by two hundred points led by the second overall placer Garrett Neal. Neal scored a total of six hundred and thirty eight points.

The girls varsity team won by an expected score of four hundred, they were led by past state champion Mackenzie Saulnier who scored a total of six hundred and sixty eight points.

Bowling mid-season recap

The ONW bowling season so far has started off to a strong start for both boys and girls. But can definitely improve on some aspects of their game.
“We need to boost everyone’s average up by about ten to fifteen pins,” Hulsen said.
IMG_1406Many of the bowlers on the team have been moving around on the roster with Varsity’s 6th and 7th spot being adjusted based on who has the hot hand. There has been multiple bowlers rotating around in the lineup.
Mackenzie Saulnier, Nathan Demars, and Garret Neil have all been key contributors and the most consistent bowlers for the first part of the season.
“I feel Garret Neil has stepped up quite a bit taking on a more of a leadership role,” Nathan Demars said.
Garret Neil has bowled in the 600’s in his past three matches. Neil helps bowlers with their form and their technique.
“Mackenzie Saulnier is one of our main contributors to what our team is and how we have performed,”Demars said.
Mackenzie Saulnier won state as a sophomore and is looking to go out on top and win state again as a senior.
“We lost a lot of seniors going into this season so a couple bowler needed to step up to fill those positions,”Hulsen said.
Going into the 2015 bowling season the team had many open spots due to many seniors leaving.   There has been many new bowlers this season, giving more opportunity to develop as a team.

From bad to not as bad. My semester review.

1.
This semester I grew in many different ways, one way is in my editing for video. I implemented many things that I've seen others do in videos like adding pictures, old video snippets, and giving a tone for the story. I also learned how to use many different styles of editing a video and ways to make it look more visually appealing. I spent a significant amount of time editing the light and making it all look the same.

In this story I made about jessie I went through hundreds even possibly thousands of pictures to find the select few that fit the story well. Many of these pictures came at times when she was talking about her and her sister, along with her early life growing up.

Also while filming this video in the different locations I would think of many different shots that would work well in a certain situation. I thought about what shots I already had and how then could compliment each other. The best way to summarize this would be the Six Shot System that I learned in the first week.

The jessie story was the climax of my video making this semester, I had many other video news packages, one of them was my first major video that went on our ONW NOW show on Sept. 17. This story took me awhile to come up with an idea for the main conflict but in knew that it should be about the senior on the team.

2.

Secondly I thought that my written stories have improved since last year. last year I covered the wrestling program here at ONW and wrote many stories about it along with one video. I only wrote a few stories on the gymnastics program but I thought I did an adequate job.

On my blog I've written a few stories but I never got around to posting them on the website. One of these stories in my post "Pre-State 2014". this story was mainly a recap of the season as awhile and what the team is looking forward to and how they may preform.

3.

During the semester I was assigned to cover the gymnastics sport for my SID class, while it washing as exiting as football may be I still learned a lot through the experience.

I learned how to film steadily, gain access to the meets and games on the ground level, and film everything that would would possibly need for the package. I feel that I can use this knowledge to my advantage when I take on my next challenge in cover Bowling.

Onward and Upward:

1. My first goal for the next semester is to have a recap video with a written story with it at least every other week, I would prefer ever week.

2. My second goal is to make at least 2 quality stories and post multiple written stories to the ONW wed site.
